VVK – FLEMISH SOCIETY OF CHILD AND ADOLESCENT PSYCHIATRY. 280 members The Flemish society was founded in the seventies of the past century and officially registered in 1992. At that time child and adolescent psychiatry was not recognised as a medical specialization. After a period of actions and lobbying, this recognition is a fact since January 2001. The training includes clinical practice – two years in child psychiatry, one year in adolescent psychiatry, one year in adult psychiatry, one year in a service associated to child and adolescent psychiatry (such as neuro-pediatric or genetic) –, psychotherapy training and scientific work. Today the society counts 165 members and its activities are various. In collaboration with the university centres of child and adolescent psychiatry, the society organises and participates in many scientific events and the organization of a congress on child and adolescent psychiatry and psychotherapy every two years with more than 800 participants. Also the society is very active in promoting mental health issues and in the improvement of the conditions for and efficiency of child and adolescent psychiatric professionals and services.
